The City of San Jose initiated a redevelopment project for the main entry plaza of the San Jose McEnery Convention Center as part of its expansion efforts, aiming to enhance the experience for both residents and visitors attending events. In partnership with Populus Architects, the design team developed a welcoming and engaging environment that encourages social interaction during and after events. Verde Design conceptualized a harmonious blend of hardscape and greenery, featuring climbing plants that intertwine with a prominent public art installation at the plaza’s heart. An amphitheater area, outfitted with synthetic turf, extends the functionality of the presentation hall, offering adaptable seating arrangements and adding visual appeal to the space. This design prioritizes flexibility to accommodate future programming needs, including provisions for food and merchandise kiosks.
The plant selection for the plaza was developed through a collaborative dialogue with the City, ensuring that the landscaping complements the overall aesthetic. The planting scheme in the main concourse is thoughtfully integrated with the sculptural element, creating a cohesive visual narrative. A “small forest” of ginkgo trees, enhanced by additional plantings, enriches the environment, contributing to a vibrant and inviting atmosphere for all who visit.
