Verde Design was selected by the City Fields Foundation and the City and County of San Francisco to plan, design, and then renovate Beach Chalet Fields in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Working within the footprint of the existing facility, we developed a solution addressing a number of issues, the first of which was to design four synthetic turf fields to meet the high demand for sports fields and help achieve the City’s sustainability goals.
Second, egress and safety were key, as the surrounding forest of trees served as the west end wind break, but was known to be an area of illicit activities. Verde Design carefully worked with City staff and arborists to create openings for pedestrian and bicycle access, and improve sight lines into the park, while enhancing the forest. The design, which includes lighting and parking lot updates, improves safety and achieves greater connectivity to the park and the surrounding streets.
