Orange Memorial Park, South San Francisco

Verde Design was engaged by the City of South San Francisco due to our specialized knowledge in the creation of multi-sport fields featuring synthetic turf, with the objective of enhancing both usage and programming. We were appointed to oversee the redevelopment of Orange Memorial Park, which entailed the replacement of outdated natural grass baseball and softball fields with advanced synthetic turf fields designed to support a variety of sports, including softball, baseball, and soccer. This modernization not only elevates the quality of the playing experience but also provides a more resilient and low-maintenance alternative for the park. The adaptability of these fields enables a broader spectrum of sports activities, effectively transforming the park into a pivotal venue for diverse sporting events and tournaments.

In addition, the project included the implementation of a new stormwater management system, which features a cistern, an infiltration gallery, and the necessary piping. To address spatial constraints, the design incorporated the Silva Cell modular pavement system, which facilitates the treatment of stormwater from adjacent hardscape areas. Our design successfully merged multiple sports fields and their related programmatic elements, as previously described, while maintaining the same spatial footprint as the original site conditions. Upon completion, the project received the prestigious the CPRS 2023 Excellence in Design – Park Planning Award.
