The base system of the synthetic turf field at Depot Park in Santa Cruz experienced a failure, necessitating a complete reconstruction. To facilitate the revitalization of the park for the benefit of the Santa Cruz community, Verde Design and Robert A. Bothman were engaged by the City to deliver Design-Build services. A series of collaborative meetings were conducted with City staff and the Design-Build team to assess various design alternatives that would cater to the requirements of the user groups. This collaborative effort resulted in a design that not only adhered to the financial constraints but also encompassed the essential scope of work. Given the urgency of returning the field to community use, adhering to a tight timeline was critical.
Our team maintained close coordination with City staff to ensure the design process was seamless and to address any emerging issues proactively, thereby safeguarding the project schedule. During the construction phase, unforeseen utilities that were not indicated on the existing plans were discovered; however, we adeptly modified the design to avoid hindering progress or incurring additional expenses. Ultimately, the project was completed two weeks ahead of the planned schedule, delivering a new, easily maintainable field for the athletes of Santa Cruz.
