Plans for the new Milpitas Skate Park began four years ago. However, due to lack of funding, the skate park was put on hold until 2018. With a bounty of community interest and support from both the Milpitas Youth Advisory Committee and the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Commission, the City moved forward with the project.
Verde Design, and its consultant Wormhoudt, Inc., was selected by the City of Milpitas to lead a community process, complete the conceptual and design development for the skate park at the Milpitas Sports Center, as well as prepare the construction documents and provide construction administration for this exciting project.
Using the information and feedback from the series of community workshops held during the feasibility study, the Verde Design team created a design for skaters of all ages and ability levels, with observation areas for all of the street and bowl features of the facility. The layout maximizes the available park space and includes an exciting 20,000 square foot skate park. The completely ADA compliant skate park also includes a skate-able entry art feature, multiple textured skate surfaces, perimeter fencing, security lighting, a picnic area, a group area for birthdays, a beginner’s area, an area for 10’x10’ tents and event booths for competitions and City events, a skate-able landscaped C.3 area, shade trees, landscaping, benches, drinking fountains and lighting for night use.
Improvements also included replacement of the existing concession and restroom building with a new prefabricated concession and restroom building. An additional restroom building was also added in the park. ADA improvements were included for access to both of these two new building facilities to service the Milpitas Sports Center fields and activities.
