In collaborative public-private partnership between the City Fields Foundation and the City of San Francisco, Verde Design embarked on a significant project aimed at converting the natural grass fields at the Minnie and Lovie Ward Recreation Center into a state-of-the-art synthetic turf facility. This initiative required comprehensive grading and the construction of retaining walls to achieve a uniform maximum slope of 2% across the playing surfaces, thereby facilitating the creation of two full-sized soccer and lacrosse fields, a softball/little league field, and a varsity baseball field. Furthermore, an advanced stormwater management system was integrated into the design to efficiently capture, store, and gradually infiltrate water into the surrounding soil, enhancing the site’s environmental sustainability. The project also included the installation of sports field lighting, perimeter fencing, bleacher seating, and improvements to walkways.
The newly developed synthetic turf fields are engineered to withstand increased usage while remaining functional and low-maintenance, even under adverse weather conditions. This upgrade provides substantial advantages to sports organizations in San Francisco, which have historically encountered difficulties in securing adequate field space for their activities. The transformation not only enhances the recreational offerings of the area but also supports the growing demand for accessible and reliable sports facilities within the community.
