Verde Design was engaged by University High School to work in conjunction with the Presidio Trust on a public-private partnership (P3) aimed at creating a cutting-edge multi-use athletic field, along with a smaller adjacent half-practice field. The primary field is designed to accommodate various sports, featuring striping for baseball, softball, boys’ and girls’ lacrosse, field hockey, and soccer. Additionally, a practice running track, complete with facilities for long jump and triple jump, is strategically located along the perimeter of the main field. The organic infill synthetic turf fields are reportedly the first in a national park. The new fields serve as practice and competition fields for University High School teams. The remainder of the time the field is used by youth, sport groups, recreation and park leagues, and open play.
In addition to the fields, the Verde Design team designed a plaza with restroom buildings and picnic tables that serve as the entrance to the complex. Our designers developed irrigation and planting to comply with the Presidio’s vegetative master plan. The project involved extensive earthwork, retaining walls, and an innovative and natural drainage system. A permeable concrete parking lot functions as an integral element of the stormwater management. The updated athletic complex provides more opportunity for students and youth sports organizations to play and practice.
