As part of Verde Design’s longstanding relationship with San Juan Unified School District, our team was selected to modernize the athletic facilities at San Juan High School, transforming an aging campus into a modern, accessible, multi-purpose athletic complex. Working closely with the District throughout planning, design, cost estimating, DSA approval, bidding, and construction, Verde Design developed a comprehensive solution that balanced athletic program needs, accessibility requirements, and long-term campus functionality.
The project centered on replacing the existing natural grass football field with a new synthetic turf field designed for football and soccer while reconstructing the existing decomposed granite track into a six-lane, 400-meter all-weather track complete with high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, shot put, and discus facilities. Additional athletic improvements included relocating the existing scoreboard, reconstructing two tennis courts, and installing new site amenities to enhance the overall athlete and spectator experience.
Beyond the athletic facilities, the project included significant campus infrastructure and accessibility improvements. Existing restroom and storage buildings were replaced with a new restroom and concession building, ticket booth, entry plaza, and equipment storage facilities. Due to the site’s challenging topography, Verde Design designed a series of accessible pathways, switchback ramps, and retaining walls to provide ADA-compliant access from the parking areas and public right-of-way to the athletic complex and spectator seating. The project also included grading, drainage, utilities, parking improvements, and supporting site infrastructure, creating a cohesive athletic venue designed to serve the District for decades to come.
