South Sunset Playground features a versatile synthetic turf field that has long served as a popular venue for the Recreation and Parks Department of the City of San Francisco. The facility includes two Little League fields flanking a central area with three soccer fields, all of which have been extensively used and appreciated by the local community. However, as the fields reached the end of operational lifespan, plans were initiated for its replacement with a new synthetic turf surface, complemented by an underlying drainage and shock pad system. To accommodate the new turf and address the height discrepancies, fine grading was performed around the perimeter to ensure a smooth transition with the existing base rock, along with necessary adjustments to the perimeter connection heights.
As part of the turf removal process, the City implemented a standard end-of-life recycling program for synthetic turf fields. During this phase, Verde Design conducted permeability assessments on the existing base material and the drainage trench located at the field’s low end. The results of these evaluations prompted Verde Design to enhance the subdrainage system at this low point by installing new drainage solutions and drain rock material. Furthermore, in addition to the turf replacement project, Verde Design worked in conjunction with the City’s Department of Public Works to make improvements to the backstop and perimeter fencing, thereby enhancing the overall functionality and safety of the facility.
